24. Louis Comfort Tiffany, A Wooded Landscape in Three Panels
It’s easy to forget how wild this was at the time. Stained glass had fallen out of fashion for centuries until the 1800s, when it was still associated with stiff, flattened saints and harsh blues and reds. Then came Louis Comfort Tiffany, pushing the limits of the material and making technical advances that allowed for a renaissance in stained glass every bit as revolutionary as that of painting 400 years prior. Nobody has matched the output of his workshop before or since. This is a spectacular landscape that’s alive, rich with natural colors and patterns, changing with the changing light.
